Abstract: The speaker reviews some of the recent evolutions regarding the development of Mathematics and the ways in which it interacts with other disciplines and society at large.
Prof Jean-Pierre Bourguignon was the Director of the Institut des Hautes Études Scientifiques (IHÉS) from 1994 till 2013. He was President of the Société mathématique de France (1990-1992) and of the European Mathematical Society (1995-1998). He joined the CNRS Science Ethics Committee in 1999 and was its Chairman from 2007 to 2011. He was President of the European Research Council (ERC) from January 2014 to December 2019, then was its interim President from July 2020 to August 2021. In October 2021, he was elected Chairman of the University Council of Ludwig Maximilian Universität Munich.
His honors and awards include Paul Langevin Prize, Académie des Sciences de Paris (1987), Physical Sciences and Mathematics Prize, Comité du Rayonnement Français (1997), Academia Europaea member (1995), Royal Spanish Academy of Sciences member (2001), London Mathematical Society honorary member (2005), Honorary doctor of Keio University, Japan (2008), Honorary doctor of Nankai University, Tianjin, China (2011), Deutsche Mathematiker Vereinigung honorary member (2017),Portugal Academy of Science foreign member (2017), Honorary doctor of the University of Edinburgh, Scotland (2018), Polish Mathematical Society honorary member (2019), Foundation Fellow of the International Science Council (2022), Order of the Rising Sun, Gold and Silver Star, Japan (2022).
