Like the characteristic method in solving the Cauchy problem for a first-order partial differential equation, we reduce the Cauchy problem for a general multidimensional Monge-Ampère equation to that for a normal firstorder system of nonlinear partial differential equations, that could be called characteristic system for a given multidimensional Monge-Amp`ere equation.
